結(yui)

結 (yui)

Exhibition location: Sago Palm Building
Work title: 結
2022, Stained glass

Stained glass incorporated as a ground window in the wall of a Japanese-style room.
The motif of "結" has a physical meaning of "to tie" or "to connect," but in the Ryukyu region, such as Amami Oshima, it carries the meaning of "residents of small villages helping and cooperating with each other." Amami Oshima is said to be an island where the spirit of Yui thrives, with a long-standing tradition of mutual assistance.

Stained glass artist: Hiroshi Kumazaki
Originally from Shizuoka Prefecture. Currently residing in Amami Oshima. As the head lead writer (production manager) at the long-established North Shore Stained Glass in Sydney, Australia, I produce traditional stained glass, a craft rooted in Western tradition.
While engaging in production and construction, I continue to create works themed on Surf & Nature in my own workshop. Since 2002, I have moved my workshop to Amami Oshima, producing works that blend naturally with Japan's traditional architecture.
