2022 | Oshima Tsumugi Mushiro, waste yarn

This work is made by reusing waste thread and the "Mushiro"material that can only be seen during the manufacturing process of Oshima Tsumugi, a traditional craft of Amami Oshima.

By using Oshima Tsumugi as a material, the hope is to raise awareness of the island's traditional crafts and contribute in some way to alleviating the problem of a lack of successors.

Oshima Tsumugi: A silk fabric that originated on Amami Oshima, it is a representative high-quality tsumugi alongside Yuki Tsumugi.

Oshima Tsumugi is said to be the "Queen of Kimono" and is known as one of the three great textiles in the world, alongside Gobelin tapestries (France) and Persian carpets (Iran).

The "Tatsugo pattern," a representative pattern of Oshima Tsumugi, is a geometric design based on the cycads and vipers that grow on Amami Oshima. The design was born from an order given to the Satsuma Domain during the Edo period to "present Oshima Tsumugi that best expresses Satsuma Oshima," and is said to represent the beauty of a golden viper trying to move onto a cycad leaf in the moonlight.
